It takes 43 muscles to frown, but only 17 to smile

The mouth is the window to the body, and your smile is one of your most unique and striking features. In fact, 61% of us have been attracted to someone by their smile alone. Good oral hygiene is vital to keeping a healthy mouth, teeth and gums and preserving your beautiful smile for years to come!

National Smile Month, is the UKs largest and longest-running oral health campaign. Dedicated to healthy smiles throughout the UK, National Smile Month has three key messages:

  1. Brush your teeth last thing at night and on at least one occasion with a fluoride toothpaste.
  2. Cut down on sugary foods and drinks.
  3. Visit your dentist

Organised by the British Dental Health Foundation, National Smile Month aims to raise awareness of the importance of good oral health and hygiene, and make a positive difference to the smiles of millions of people across the UK. Activities across the month will aim to engage children and adults with oral hygiene in fun and interesting ways.

How Can I Get Involved?

There will be hundred of events up and down the country to educate and engage people with oral health. It’s easy to take part. If you have a passion for health and wellbeing in your community, you can get involved in activities in your dentist surgery, hospital, GP surgery or out on the streets. The National Smile Month Events Hub is creating opportunities for supporters and organisers to share information and ideas on how best to spread the oral health message.

Just a few example of what’s in store include:

Toothbrush Exchange – Hand in your old toothbrush and get a brand new one, free of charge!

Smileathon – Grab a ‘Smiley’ and take as many pictures as you can of you and your friends or colleagues.

Role Play – Oral hygienists and dentists will demonstrate their work through role play at dental surgeries across the country.

BrushathonSchoolchildren can partner up with a nearby school and brush together with a partner.

Other events will include fancy dress, fun days, expert talks, roadshows, healthy food checks, roadshows and much, much more…
